All sets are off: #1

At long last, I've hooked myself up with some server space, so hopefully a minor deluge of mixes is forthcoming.

Here's the schaffel mix that I put together for Sonar a la Carte this summer. Recorded live, no edits. (Eg, go easy on me in the loose spots.) The levels are a little low, so you may need to listen loud. Click here to download the mix (92MB). I've moved the file to a .mac homepage, so you may need to rename the file with a ".mp3" extension in order to save it correctly. Let me know if you encounter problems.

Schaffel Is Stronger than Pride:
T. Rex, Baby Strange (Reprise)
Jürgen Paape, Ballroom Blitz (Speicher/Kompakt)
Electronicat, Amat Salé (Disko B)

Excellent work Philip! Currently passing this along to all my friends - hope I don't overwhelm your server.

*shufflin' around the office*

Is that vocal sample around ~19 minutes Licht und Farben by Rollergirl?

Posted by: qDot at August 16, 2004 01:02 PM

Ah... very nice mix. Feels like I'm back in Köln.

Watch out Phil, you've been Metafiltered.

Hope you have cheap hosting! :)

I saw that! Crikey, I'm glad I moved that sucker over to the .mac homepage today - I was already veering dangerously close to overstepping my bandwidth limit. Note to self: next time, compress at a lower rate than 192...!

(Thanks to everyone that's spread the word on this! It's lovely to get to be heard for once - a far cry from my usual, sparsely-populated club nights.)

Posted by: Philip Sherburne at August 16, 2004 04:43 PM

awesome mix Phil. been overdosing on Dntel/Postal Service/Death Cab lately. Be good to listen to some techno again.

Posted by: Brian at August 16, 2004 06:17 PM

this is great, thanks for the mix!

Posted by: strikingdstance at August 16, 2004 07:14 PM

Sparsely populated club night? Forward-thinking music? In San Francisco?! Simply unheard of. ;)

Posted by: Eli Bingham at August 16, 2004 11:20 PM

Eli, I know, what am I thinking?

Posted by: Philip Sherburne at August 17, 2004 11:43 PM

Schaffel is STONGER?... miss the 'r' on the file name. Great stuff Phil, love it. Greetings from Mexico.

I knew some one was gonna beat me to the T.Rex tech-house mix mash up. God damn it... now I gotta find new glam rock to mix w/ Akufen just to be original =)
I hence forth order that Marc Bolan's voice make it's way over many 4/4s in the coming years.

Peace,
A

and to add to this, I didn't even know the Schaffel beat is 6/8 instead of 4/4s. ahhh the humanity of it all...

solid - i've been getting into this subgenre of house over the past year and really dig it... i have two m.mayer mixes (fabric and immer), and a fairly good clutch of vinyl too - just wanted to say thanks!

Sounds like the Dr. Who-theme on techno, no? :-)

Dein Mix ist supergeil!!

Posted by: lynnel at August 25, 2004 01:21 PM

Very good mix, pity about some of the odd set programming choices (i felt that some of the tunes selected didn't really follow on from each other very coherently/smoothly, but maybe that was the effect that M. Sherburne was going for?). Anyway, pedantic quibbling aside this is a big mix with some great tunes and quite a lot of eclectic variety.
